Porta Optica - Distributed Optical Gateway to GÉANT2

چکیده
Dark fibre networks are considered the key element of future research infrastructures. The ownership of fibre leads to the freedom of development, freedom of choice of technology and freedom of design for research networks, as well as virtually unlimited transmission capacity. This concept has been confirmed by the new design of the GÉANT2[1] network, where majority of links will be based on dark fibre. At the same time, while the GÉANT2 network has been upgraded to a level of technology that allows multiple 10Gbit/s connections between most of the GÉANT2 partners, many countries of Eastern Europe are still suffering from insufficient connectivity to the Internet. It is expected that a strong role in the development of pan-European research network can be played by so called “Cross Border Fibres” (CBF), owned and operated by NRENs. This paper provides an overview of the PIONIER infrastructure and the Porta Optica initiative, which aims to improve the connectivity of Eastern European NRENs to GÉANT2, using a CBF infrastructure.

متن کاملGlare suppression by coherence gated negation.
Imaging of a weak target hidden behind a scattering medium can be significantly confounded by glare. We report a method, termed coherence gated negation (CGN), that uses destructive optical interference to suppress glare and allow improved imaging of a weak target. As a demonstration, we show that by permuting through a set range of amplitude and phase values for a reference beam interfering wi...

متن کاملTime-domain diffuse correlation spectroscopy.
Physiological monitoring of oxygen delivery to the brain has great significance for improving the management of patients at risk for brain injury. Diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) is a rapidly growing optical technology able to non-invasively assess the blood flow index (BFi) at the bedside. The current limitations of DCS are the contamination introduced by extracerebral tissue and the ne...
متن کاملWhispering-gallery-mode emission from biological luminescent protein microcavity assemblies.
Fluorescence and bioluminescence are widely used to study biological systems from molecular to whole organism level. However, their broadband emission is often a bottleneck for sensitive spectral measurements and multiplexing. To overcome the limitation, the emitters can be coupled with optical cavity modes to generate narrowband spectral features. Here we demonstrate several types of emitter-r...
